KARL KATZ (1929-2017)

Prior to founding MUSE Film and Television in 1991, Karl Katz served as the Chairman for Special Projects and subsequently Chairman for Exhibitions and Loans at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.  In these capacities, Katz helped create the major exhibition program of The Met, which led to a significant increase in museum attendance and became a worldwide standard in art museums.  During his tenure, Katz also founded the Office of Film and Television at The Met, with the goal of using film and television to reach new audiences and to deepen understanding for art.  The Office of Film and Television produced nearly fifty films, making The Met foremost among museums worldwide for films on art (several of those films are now distributed by MUSE).  In 1984, Katz assumed the role of Executive Director of The Met's joint venture with the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Program for Art on Film.  The Program created the largest database in the world of films on art and produced fifteen experimental films.

In addition to his pioneering work connecting film and the moving image with art appreciation, Karl Katz has also worked as an archaeologist, as a museum planner and designer, and as a museum director.  In the late 1950s, Katz traveled and excavated in Israel, Egypt, Cyprus, Turkey and Iran.  In 1958, he was invited to co-head the team that created Israel's National Museum of Art and Archaeology in Jerusalem.  He has since developed the concepts for a number of innovative museums, including: The Museum of the Jewish Diaspora in Tel-Aviv, the Museum of the History of Jerusalem in the Tower of David, the P.T. Barnum Museum in Bridgeport, Connecticut, The Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles, the Hans Christian Andersen Museum in Copenhagen, and KIASMA, The Museum of the Twentieth Century in Helsinki.

Katz served as the first Vice President of the Board of Trustees of the International Center of Photography.  He also served on the Board of Trustees of the Municipal Arts Society, New York; the Advisory Committee of the Department of Fine Arts and Archaeology at Columbia University; and was a Trustee of the Park Avenue Armory.
