Book of Kells: The Work of Angels?

from 19.99

An examination, for the first time on screen, of Colum Cille's great gospel. The intricate beauty and design in the Book of Kells led its privileged viewers to deem it "the work of angels."  Now, thanks to high definition video, one has access to an up-close exploration of the illuminated manuscript that is perhaps the greatest glory of Irish art.

Native Celtic artists in the 700s and 800s A.D. adorned the Four Gospels with illuminated decoration and calligraphy that have earned the Book of Kells the reputation as the most beautiful book in the world. The Eastern Church Celtic shapes and symbols used by the artists have been adopted into many aspects of today's art.

Today the Book of Kells rests in the Trinity College library in Dublin. It has mystified and motivated writers over the centuries. Its intricate Celtic knotwork continues to influence artists and craftsmen today, and its impact will last for years to come.
